One of the most useful changes in our poultry planning was moving away from the idea of one very large broiler tractor.
The current approved design is based on approximately 300 broilers per batch divided among four pasture shelters sized for roughly 75 birds each. Commercial RLF broiler production has not started, so those numbers are a planning design—not a claim that four tractors or 300-bird batches are operating today.
Why four units?
First, human movement matters. A pasture shelter that looks efficient on a drawing can become an operational problem if moving it every day requires equipment, multiple people, or more physical effort than the farm can reliably provide. Smaller shelters are intended to remain human-movable and easier to reposition frequently.
Second, modularity reduces single-point failure. If one shelter needs repair, the entire batch is not dependent on one structure. The same modularity can help with field layout, uneven ground, temporary pasture constraints, or a decision to adjust group size.
Third, smaller groups can spread poultry impact across more of the pasture. Four units can be positioned and moved in ways that fit field conditions rather than forcing every bird through the exact same footprint.
The four-unit design also gives us a more useful growth model. The farm does not need to build a completely different system every time production changes. The same basic module can be repeated, reduced, repaired, or replaced independently.
None of that eliminates the other gates that determine whether a broiler batch should happen. Chicks need to be ordered at the right time. Brooding capacity must exist. Feed, water, pasture, predator protection, processing appointments, transport, packaging, customer demand, and operating reserves all have to line up before birds arrive.
Processor access is especially important. A planned 300-bird batch has no value if the farm cannot legally and practically process those birds on the required timeline. Demand matters too. We would rather sell a well-planned smaller batch cleanly than produce a larger batch because a spreadsheet says we can.
The shelter design therefore reflects a broader RLF principle: modular infrastructure should make the farm easier to adapt, not lock it into a production number before the land and market prove what works.
