Intensively Managed Grazing

RLF plans to use frequent observation, controlled livestock movement, and deliberate recovery to match grazing pressure to what the pasture can support.

The planned sequence

The principal concept places cattle first, sheep next, and poultry after them where conditions make that sequence useful. Cattle can take a first pass at taller forage, sheep can use a somewhat different portion of the plant community, and poultry can contribute manure distribution and other pasture interactions after grazing livestock.

This is a framework, not a rule that every group will enter every paddock. Animal needs, forage height, weather, parasite concerns, field access, soil moisture, and recovery status will determine actual moves.

Recovery is the center of the system

Moving animals is only one half of grazing management. The larger question is how long a grazed area needs before it is ready to be grazed again.

Planning has used roughly 30–45 days as a reference range in some scenarios, but the live website should never present that range as a permanent schedule. Recovery may be shorter during rapid spring growth and substantially longer during summer slowdown, drought, cold weather, or after heavier grazing.

Stocking density is a tool, not a slogan

RLF may use relatively concentrated groups for short periods where appropriate, but stocking density must remain subordinate to animal comfort, available forage, soil conditions, movement logistics, and the desired residual. More animals in a smaller area is not automatically better grazing management.

Measure before expanding

Once land is controlled, grazing records will track paddock use, dates, estimated forage condition, animal groups, recovery, and observed outcomes. Those records will replace planning assumptions and help establish the real carrying capacity of the farm.
