What Intensively Managed Grazing Means at RLF

“Rotational grazing” can describe anything from occasionally moving livestock between large fields to highly controlled daily movements. For RLF, the more useful description of our planned system is intensively managed grazing.

The emphasis is on managed.

We intend to control where livestock graze, observe how much forage is available and left behind, move animals before a paddock is repeatedly grazed too short, and give plants the recovery time they need before animals return. That recovery period changes with the farm and the season.

Some of our planning scenarios have used roughly 30–45 days as a reference range between grazing events. That is not a promise or a permanent schedule. Spring pasture can grow rapidly. Summer heat or drought can slow growth dramatically. Soil type, rainfall, plant community, grazing pressure, and the previous rotation all matter. Once we have land, actual records will replace generalized planning assumptions.

The principal multispecies concept places cattle first, sheep next, and poultry after them where conditions support that sequence. The species do not graze exactly the same way, and their different behaviors can be useful. Cattle can take a first pass at taller forage. Sheep can use a somewhat different portion of the plant community. Poultry can contribute manure distribution and other pasture interactions after the grazing animals.

But the sequence is a framework, not a ritual. Every paddock will not necessarily receive every species. Animal needs, parasites, weather, forage, field access, and soil conditions can all change the decision.

Pigs are different enough that we are planning them separately. Their rooting can create useful disturbance in the right place and too much disturbance in the wrong one. They should not simply follow the cattle-sheep-poultry sequence because a diagram looks tidy.

Intensively managed grazing also does not mean maximizing animal density for its own sake. Stocking density is one tool among many. The goal is to match animal impact to forage availability, soil conditions, animal comfort, and the residual we want to leave behind.

The part visitors do not always see is the recordkeeping. We plan to track which animals entered a paddock, when they entered and left, what the forage looked like, how long the area rested, and what we observed on the next pass. Those records will help us answer the question that matters most: is the management leaving the pasture more capable of supporting the farm over time?
